The Lake Yellowstone Cabins

Finding a place to stay was the biggest issue when I went to Yellowstone National Park. There are so many places to stay in the 3,472 square mile park that I found it a difficult task to pick where I wanted to spend my nights. But with well over three million annual visitors, the bulk of which go in the summer when the park is more accessible, the rooms tend to fill up fast. And despite looking well ahead, I found myself spending my time between two lodges.

I continued to call Xanterra Parks and Resorts, the management company for the park’s lodging, and was ultimately able to score all my nights in the same place – the Lake Yellowstone Cabins. And truthfully, it was just what I was looking for and had hoped. I really couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay in the park.

The cabins, which come in various sizes in order to accommodate different numbers of guests, were rustic. And that was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a quiet cabin, without any television or media connectivity, so I could relax and enjoy the national park the way I felt it should be done. I didn’t want any more connection than what I would get in the lodge’s dining hall, which made excellent meals for a cafeteria-style facility.

My Frontier Cabin, which was the smallest of all the cabins, was very small and quaint. There wasn’t a lot of room to move about, but it was just right for one or two guests staying to explore the park. And, most importantly for me, it was always clean and well kept by the housing staff. I hate coming back to a room that looks like the dust was just blown off the shelves, and no vacuuming was done, but that was not the case here. The place was clean and tidy.

The cabin was a short walk to the main lodge, where the dining facilities are located as well as a bar for late night socialization. And just a short walk from there, was Lake Yellowstone – which can be viewed from the comfort of several chairs on the lodge’s veranda. Other facilities, such as groceries and fuel, were also nearby and not a hassel to find. But, most importantly to many, the location was great since it wasn’t too far on one side of the park or the other. It was quite central to all the highlights of Yellowstone National Park.

I definitely give the Lake Yellowstone Cabins a big thumbs up. My experience in them was top notch. I really couldn’t have hoped for anything better as I explored one of the jewels of the National Park Service, and all the great scenery and wildlife it has to offer. The only problem now is struggling not to stay there again on a return visit instead of finding out what one of the other locations has to offer.
