Top Cities to Visit in Scotland

Visiting Scotland: Top Cities to Visit

With so much on offer, it’d be impossible to appreciate all that Scotland offers in a weekend. But a little insight into the offerings of the various cities will help in your decision making about where to visit first.

Glasgow

A perfect city to appreciate the buzzing nightlife that Scotland has to offer. You can find a great deal of cheap hotels in Glasgow giving you the opportunity to enjoy its splendour as much as possible. Visit its Gallery of Modern Art before meandering around the Mackintosh Ten to find out more about the genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his contribution to modern society. Enjoy a sumptuous steak at Grill on the Corner before painting the town red at the huge number of bars, pubs and clubs in this thriving city.

Edinburgh

A visit to Scotland wouldn’t be the same without feeling the magic come alive in its beautiful capital. Check out the gloriously regal Edinburgh Castle for a look into the heritage and history of this spectacular city. If you’re visiting during the festive period, check out the German markets that line the city streets or have a go at ice skating on the rink with the Castle as a backdrop. Visit the grave of John Gray and his loyal Bobby who guarded his master for 13 years in Greyfriars Kirkyard before embarking on a journey of discovery at the Scotch Whiskey Heritage Centre or Our Dynamic Earth.

Aberdeen

With umpteen outdoor locations to relax and unwind in and a myriad of museums in the city centre to wander, there’s plenty to be getting on with in the Scottish granite city. Stroll along Aberdeenshire’s Castle Trail which takes you on a journey through 13 of the most beautiful and unique castles. If you’re travelling with children, check out the Archeolink Prehistoric Park or the Stratosphere Science Centre to keep their curiosity at bay.

Dundee

Enjoy a round of golf at the scenic Downfield Golf Club or, for more adrenaline filled entertainment, be sure to check out Battlefield Live for the ultimate game of Laserquest. Serious fun for all the family, you won’t be disappointed. With the best in simulated weapons and replica urban war zones, enjoy the thrills before recharging with a drink and snack at the on site cafe.

For a spot of culture, check out Verdant Works – the only working jute textile museum in the UK. Alternatively, enjoy some of Dundee’s heritage with a family day out at Discovery Point, which preserves the memory of Captain Scott and his expedition to the South Pole. Step aboard the RSS Discovery or be transported to Antarctica on a voyage of exploration.

The beauty of Scotland is often underestimated, regardless of the time of year. A perfect city break awaits this festive season, bringing you oodles of Christmas spirit just in time for the family celebrations. Book your trip now and make use of the various online offers.

The Verdant Works in Dundee is fab – but don’t limit yourself to the castle in Edinburgh. See my post on the National Museum of Scotland – I’d choose that anyday over Dynamic Earth, though to be fair it’s a good few years since I’ve been to the latter.
I’m told (by my husband and teenage son) the Surgeon’s Hall Museum near to NMS is also well worth a visit, if not for the faint-hearted…
