Hiking with Benny

The view from the rim at Castlewood Canyon

For the past few weeks, I’ve been hosting two visiting journalists – one from Pakistan and one from Germany. Based on my weird work schedule, and all of the things she wanted to do while in Denver, I wasn’t able to get out at all with the visiting Pakistani journalist. This morning, though, I went on a hike with Benny, who is visiting from Mainz, Germany. Anna the Puppy and I took him to one of our favorite spots, Castlewood Canyon. The canyon hike, as I’ve talked about before, is quite beautiful. And to show it to Benny today – under bright blue skies with Pikes Peak, a Colorado landmark, looming in the back – was just fantastic, a great way to start a day and end a week.

Mainz……really? That is basically where your Mother and I lived for over 2 yrs. and Shell was born. I was stationed at the little US Army air base (it has now been given back to the Germans) just outside the little town of Finthen, Germany. The nicest place for dinner out was at the Mainz bahnhof (train station). That’s where Phyllis and I would go for a special occasion and have weiner schneitzel. We lived in Gonsenheim which is next to Mainz and went to the movies and shopping in Weisbaden where there was a big US air force base with a theater and commissary. Shell was born at the US Air Force hospital in Weisbaden. Oct. 5, 1966 – Dec. ? , 1968 (my life)

Great that you and the pup were able to hike with visitors. Looks like a beautiful spot.
