Climbing the Stairs at the Great Wall of China

Just ask the Mongols; climbing the Great Wall of China is no easy task. I did it twice, though, on my trip to Beijing. Once at Badaling, which is the section all of the tourists seem to go to – and it shows with a carnival-like atmosphere – and out to Simatai, which is pictured here. While Badaling has a well-maintained wall with an easy trail, Simatai has a lot of straight up and straight down, making it one heck of a workout. But, despite the hard climb, I made it to one heck of an amazing view.

A bucket list item for sure. I would love to run a section of the Great Wall. Not sure if that is possible. I heard they have a race on one section. Definitely would not want to run this part. I would love to walk it though and take in the amazing views. Great photos.

Thanks, Ted! It really is an amazing section to see. I much preferred it to Badaling. Although, after being back for several years, I’ve heard that some construction has been done. I wonder if it’s more or less rebuilt like the ones closer to Beijing.
