Paratrooper John Steele was stuck on this church in Sainte-Mere-Eglise
Seventy years ago today – on June 6, 1944 – the Allies invaded the beaches of Normandy, which was the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. Six years ago my father and I walked the beaches and through the cities and a cemetery. Today I look back through those photos, remembering both what we experienced and what happened.

Nazi-fortified Pointe du Hoc between Utah and Omaha Beaches
I visited the D-Day beaches 21 years ago for the 49th anniversary. It was an incredible experience and one of my first overseas trips. Thanks for reminding me with these great pictures. Hope to get back there someday.
I loved seeing your photos, too. Such an amazing place. I also really want to go back. My family is originally from that area…there abouts 1,000 years ago, anyway.
