In a country as vast and well connected as America, it’s hard to resist the lure of the open roads. With roads stretching across states and even from coast to coast, the world is your oyster if you’re looking for a scenic route to take. But if you were looking for the very best that America has to offer, you’d do well to head for Utah. Book flights and compare car hire, before setting off for a journey that will blow your mind and take your breath away.
Utah is a great state to explore given that it has such a varied landscape. In the north, you’ll find rugged mountain ranges and forests whilst the south is filled with gaping canyons and deserts. The weather here can also be rather extreme as a result of the nature of the land so it’s worth researching before you travel. What Utah does offer is the chance to fully get back to nature and
to take in everything it has to offer. It’s time to hit the road.
The east of the state offers up the thrilling chance to explore where dinosaurs once roamed the earth on the spectacular Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway. The route runs through 512 miles of land, from Eastern Utah to the neighbouring Western Colorado. The majority of the highway runs through Utah and given how vast the route is, you get to take in an enormous amount of sightseeing. You can explore the Canyonlands (above) and Arches National Parks (below), the Colorado River and many, many breathtaking canyons. With the landscape so rugged, it’s great to get out in the great outdoors and it’s the perfect place to camp out under the stars, go white-water rafting and do some off-road driving. Once you’ve filled your days with the many activities available, it’s time to take in the real lure of Utah. Taking a trip along this road gives you a unique opportunity to discover what life was like millions of years ago and to learn how we are now preserving and researching our prehistoric history. The views are quite simply stunning and the land so rugged, it’s not hard to imagine dinosaurs roaming the land as they once did.
Along the way, there are some places you must visit. The Dinosaur National Monument stretches across the two states and takes in over 200,000 acres of land to explore. Whilst the vast majority lies in Colorado, in Vernal, Utah you can visit the Dinosaur
Quarry Visitors Centre which gives an insight into this area which is known to be one of the richest sources of Jurassic period dinosaurs. Steven Spielberg, eat your heart out! If you want to watch a live dig, head off to the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry which has seen a wide range of dinosaurs emerge from the land. And if you’re feeling the need to get your hands dirty, there are also opportunities to take part in a dig yourself but ensure you do your research before your trip and book onto a dig as they’re very popular.
